What’s happening near you?
Explore recent earthquakes worldwide, flood warnings in England and weather alerts in the United States. Coverage is partial: this is not an official emergency alert service.
Map exploration is not saved. Notifications save a location only when you opt in. Feeds receive your IP address; flood and US weather providers receive coordinates when checked.
City dots show the highest matched report from available feeds. Grey means unknown or no matched reports, never an all-clear. Small squares mark M4.5+ earthquake epicentres from the past 24 hours. On small screens, swipe across the map or choose a city below.

How the meter works & what it doesn’t cover
The meter and city dots summarise the highest-severity report returned by available feeds. Environment Agency warnings use their original flood severity (1: severe, 2: warning, 3: alert); NWS alerts use their reported severity. Earthquakes are marked “Recorded event”: magnitude and distance do not determine your local danger. “No nearby reports” means only that these sources returned no matches, never that you are safe.
Earthquakes are matched within 300 km of the selected point; England flood warning-area reference points within 50 km. Neither distance test means an event affects your address. US weather alerts use the provider’s point filter; elsewhere weather is not covered. Flood warnings outside England, wildfire, conflict, terrorism, disease and infrastructure failures are not monitored as local warning levels. Cyber advisories appear separately under Regional news and do not change the meter. Check local authorities and official warnings.
Feeds refresh every five minutes while this page is visible. A failed or malformed response is marked unavailable and excluded from the meter. Earthquake and US weather feeds are also excluded when their feed timestamp is over two hours old. The England flood feed supplies no snapshot timestamp: its status shows the fetch time; individual warnings show their message time. City checks use the same source rules: earthquakes worldwide, flood-area reference points within 50 km of London and point-based US weather for New York and Los Angeles. Other hazards and locations remain outside coverage. A nearby earthquake is shown as a recorded event, not a prediction of danger. Select a city dot or use the city selector to inspect its coverage and open its location reports. There are no push notifications. Location sharing requires browser permission and HTTPS.

Want a heads-up?
Optional browser notifications for local reports and selected cyber advisories. Choose the updates you want.
Uses your current map location when you switch it on.
Delivery, privacy & browser support
Permission is optional. You can turn notifications off here or revoke permission in your browser’s site settings. Open-site notifications stop when the site is closed. Background tabs may be delayed by the browser; checks are normally every five minutes. Background push requires this site’s notification service to be active and still depends on browser, operating system and connectivity.
Available reports from the first successful check set a baseline. When a source recovers from an outage, a previously unseen active report may notify you. Subsequent checks notify about new matching reports or severity increases. Changing your watched location or filters resets that baseline. Your watch location stays fixed when you explore other places on the map; use “Save notification settings” to watch the current map location instead.
These are supplementary updates from limited feeds, not an official emergency warning service. Do not rely on them as your only way of receiving urgent information. Failed or stale sources never produce an all-clear notification. Nearby reports may not affect your address.
Notifications require HTTPS and a supported browser. On iPhone and iPad, background notifications generally require adding this site to the Home Screen and opening it there. Delivery and permission support vary by device. Background subscriptions are removed when you unsubscribe, when the provider reports expiry, or after 180 days; return to this site and save your notification settings to renew.
Disaster news.
A wider perspective.
Follow disaster and humanitarian headlines by region, or read cyber advisories from official sources. These updates never change the local alert meter.
Choose a news region independently of the map. Regional feeds cover broad areas, not your address.

News sources, freshness & regional coverage
The Cyber attacks & security filter uses the UK NCSC news feed and disables the geographical region filter: these advisories can concern software or services used worldwide. They do not prove an attack on your account or city and never affect city dots or the warning meter. Other worldwide and international regions use UN News RSS feeds. The United Kingdom selection uses Environment Agency and UK Health Security Agency news published on GOV.UK. It is a limited environmental and health selection, not a complete UK news feed; these publications can also discuss events overseas. Regions follow publisher feeds and are selected manually. This is a limited selection of sources, not a comprehensive local news service.
Headlines are automatically selected and tagged using disaster-related words in their titles. Tags can be imperfect, and relevant stories may be missed. Stories can cover several threats or places. No article bodies or images are republished; open a headline to read the source and its latest corrections.
Only headlines dated within the last 30 days are included, newest first. A feed can contain fewer stories and may omit older reports. UN dates are publisher-supplied publication times; government dates can reflect publication or an update. A publication date is not necessarily the date of the disaster.
The browser checks every 10 minutes while this page is visible. The server caches successful retrievals for 10 minutes. If a provider fails, a previous retrieval may be shown for up to an hour with a clear label. Retrieval times show when our server received the feed, not a guarantee of complete or current reporting. Empty or unavailable news never means an area is safe.
News requests go through this website’s PHP reader; no precise location is sent. The sources receive the hosting server’s IP address. External source links have their own privacy policies. UK government information is available under the Open Government Licence v3.0 except where otherwise stated. International source: UN News.

Good food. Simple ingredients.
Every recipe uses items on your shopping list. Choose no-cook meals when power or safe cooking facilities are unavailable.
Use safe drinking water and clean utensils. Check allergens and labels: only eat products cold if sold ready to eat. Eat opened food promptly; without safe refrigeration, make only what you can finish. Never use barbecues, generators or outdoor camping stoves indoors or in enclosed spaces.

Guides summarise public advice checked on 24 October 2026. Follow emergency responders and local instructions first. Services differ across UK nations.
Affiliate disclosure & editorial approach
Shopping links may earn us a commission at no extra cost to you. Direct affiliate links are labelled “Affiliate link”; retailer searches may also earn commission through Skimlinks when you allow optional affiliate tracking. Eligibility depends on the retailer and our approved programmes. Prices, availability and suitability must be checked with the retailer. Equipment categories are suggestions, not product tests or endorsements. Guides remain freely accessible.
Affiliate tracking preferences
With your permission, Skimlinks can convert eligible shopping links into affiliate links. Skimlinks and its partners may use cookies or similar technologies and receive browsing and click information, including your IP address, to attribute purchases. Emergency guidance and official sources are excluded. You can use every guide and shopping list without enabling it.
Optional affiliate tracking is off.
Your choice is saved in this browser for up to 180 days. Turning tracking off reloads this page to stop the Skimlinks script; it does not remove cookies already set by other providers or undo earlier clicks. Direct affiliate links can still attribute a purchase after you follow them.
Privacy & saved checklists
This site has no user accounts or analytics. Optional Skimlinks affiliate tracking loads only after you allow it in Affiliate tracking preferences; your choice is saved in this browser. Optional notification preferences and the chosen watch coordinates are saved in your browser. Background mode also stores a push subscription and watch preferences in private server storage; turning notifications off removes that subscription. Regional news requests go through this site’s server and share only the chosen broad region; precise location is not sent to news sources. The alert panel requests third-party public feeds; providers receive your IP address. England flood and US weather lookups also send your selected coordinates. Browser location is requested only when you press “Use my location”. It is saved only if you explicitly enable notifications for that location. Your checklist and planner preferences are stored only in this browser, when available. Use “Reset list” to remove saved checklist data. Following an external link takes you to that provider’s own privacy policy.
